Local fix for 'Surrender' statue

Regarding "A little while to miss the kiss," by Robert Eckhart:
It's doubtful that a little ferric oxide on the "Unconditional Surrender" statue necessitated a risky and costly repair out of state. How about instituting a policy that local vendors are given an opportunity to bid on city projects? A number of metal-finishing companies in town could have repaired the statue without moving it. Students from Ringling College of Art and Design could have followed with any necessary paint touch-ups.
The Sara DeSoto Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution asked the city for leads to refurbish the Historic Whitaker Marker on 12th Street. It had been placed by our nonprofit organization in 1936. A member of the Historic Commission said it sends its markers to a company in Ohio for refurbishing and repairs. The commission members didn't suggest local metal-finishing companies, saying they were unaware of any.
We researched local options and chose a company that offered a more substantial method of sandblasting, powder coating and hand-painting, at a much lower price than the Ohio company used by the city. Don Franklin of Sarasota's American Finishing Co. stayed very involved in DAR's marker project and participated in the rededication ceremony last January in Historic Pioneer Park. The pride of his staff in working on a local historic project was very evident. Mr. Franklin has continued his support of local historic preservation with pro bono projects.
Let's support our local companies and our local students. The goodwill connections are invaluable and cost-effective, and create a wonderful sense of community.
